Mastering Video Interview Etiquette: Your Guide to Making a Great Impression
In today’s hiring world, video interviews have become the norm. No matter what position you apply for, chances are at some point in your application process a video interview will be part of it. Presenting yourself virtually is essential. While you might be interviewing from the comfort of your home. That doesn’t mean the expectations are any lower. We at JR Bechtle & Co. have conducted thousands of video interviews and have seen it all – mostly good but sometimes not!
Here are key video interview etiquette tips to help you stand out for all the right reasons along with some tips based on real examples:
1. Test your tech:
Make sure your internet connection is stable, your camera and microphone work and check for any potential software updates. Do a test call with a friend or record yourself to see what you look like from an interviewer’s perspective.
Not to do: Avoid using a NFL coach style communication gear as this is quite distracting.
2. Choose a clean, quiet, and well-lit space:
Your background should be clean and free of distractions. A plain wall or a simple bookshelf is ideal. Natural light is your best friend, but if that’s not available, position a lamp in front of you – not behind. Avoid sitting in front of a window and make sure your pets don’t surprise you live during your interview.
Tip: Avoid any room especially a basement with wires hanging from ceiling, or crookedly hung pictures in the wall behind you, and any view of your pool in the background along with scantily clad swimmers frolicking in it.
3. Dress professionally:
Yes, you are in the comfort of your own home but dress to impress still counts. At least wear a professional top but consider wearing full business attire in case you need to stand up unexpectedly. It will also put you in the right mindset.
Tip: As with an in-person interview, take a last look in the mirror to make sure you’re all set – for example, all necessary buttons are buttoned and both sides of the collar are where they should be (i.e., one down and one up).
4. Be punctual and prepared:
Join the meeting a few minutes early (but not much earlier). Have a copy of your resume, the job description and some notes prepared. Know your talking points, answer questions directly and – very important – have thoughtful questions prepared.
Tip: Do your homework on the people you’re meeting with and be sure to pay attention during the introduction so as to avoid asking questions that were already answered (and getting the response, “well, as I said earlier …”).
5. Maintain good virtual body language:
Look into the camera, not the screen when speaking. Sit up straight, avoid fidgeting, and stay focused and alert.
Tip: Don’t multitask during the interview because this – believe us – is quickly noticed no matter how skilled some might believe they are at both interviewing and responding to emails.
6. Handle glitches with grace:
If your screen freezes or your audio cuts out, don’t panic. This happens all the time. Acknowledge the issue and if necessary, have a phone ready to switch.
Tip: Best is to practice switching to another device so you’re ready. Handling technical difficulties smoothly and with a touch of humor, since we’ve all been there, often leaves the strongest and most positive impression after the interview is over.
Video interviews are your chance to shine from anywhere in the world. With the right preparation and setup, you can create a lasting impression that moves you one step closer to your next opportunity.
